COMPLETE GUIDE TO BAPTISM
Quick answer: Baptism is a public act of obedience in which a follower of Jesus is immersed in water to declare faith in His death, burial and resurrection. Baptism doesn’t save anyone. It celebrates the salvation God gives by grace through faith. At Wooddale Church, with locations in Eden Prairie, Edina and Minneapolis near the University of Minnesota, we practice believer’s baptism by immersion.

Perhaps you’ve recently said yes to following Jesus, you’re curious about your infant baptism or you’ve simply wondered why baptism matters so much. Each article in this series answers one of those questions.
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
— 1 Peter 3:15
This is probably the question we’re asked more than any other. If you were baptized as an infant, your parents were almost certainly expressing something beautiful. They wanted you to know Jesus. They desired God’s blessing over your life. Many also promised to raise you in the Christian faith. Those are wonderful gifts.
At Wooddale, however, we believe the New Testament consistently presents baptism as following a person’s own response of faith. For that reason, we encourage those who have personally trusted Christ to be baptized as believers, not because their infant baptism was meaningless, but because they now have the opportunity to personally declare the faith their parents hoped would one day become their own. Rather than replacing your infant baptism, believer’s baptism fulfills the desire that likely motivated it.
Sometimes. Most of the time, no. If you were baptized after personally placing your faith in Jesus Christ, there is no biblical need to be baptized again. Baptism is a once-for-all declaration of your union with Christ. However, if you were baptized before you genuinely trusted Christ, then what happened was not believer’s baptism in the biblical sense.
Many people come to authentic faith years after participating in a religious ceremony. When that happens, believer’s baptism becomes an appropriate next step. The question isn’t, “How many times have we been baptized?” The better question is, “Were we baptized after personally trusting Jesus Christ?”
You’re not alone. Very few people enjoy standing in front of a crowd. The good news is this: Your baptism isn’t about giving a polished speech. It’s about pointing people to Jesus.
At Wooddale, we’ll help you every step of the way. We’ll explain exactly what to expect. We’ll answer your questions. And if being in front of large crowds feels overwhelming, we’ll work with you to make the experience as comfortable as possible while still allowing you to publicly identify with Christ. Remember: People won’t be evaluating your performance. They’ll be celebrating God’s grace.
One of the greatest misconceptions about testimonies is that dramatic stories are somehow better. They’re not. Every testimony has the same Hero. Jesus. Whether He rescued you from addiction or from self-righteousness, whether you trusted Him at eight years old or eighty, the miracle is exactly the same. Dead people are made alive. Don’t compare your story to someone else’s. Celebrate the grace God has shown you.
Absolutely. One joy of baptism is celebrating with the people who have walked alongside you. Family members often attend. Friends celebrate. Children watch. Sometimes parents or spouses participate by reading Scripture, praying or helping share your testimony. Baptism is deeply personal. But it is also wonderfully communal. It allows those who love you to celebrate what God has done in your life.
This may seem like a small question. It’s not. When you’re preparing for baptism, practical details matter. At Wooddale, we’ll provide clear instructions in advance. Generally, you’ll want to wear clothing that’s modest, comfortable and appropriate for being immersed in water. We’ll also provide towels, changing areas and guidance so that you can focus on what really matters. Our goal is to remove distractions so you can fully enjoy the moment.
Welcome to discipleship. Following Jesus doesn’t mean we’ll never stumble again. It means we’ve learned where to run when we do. Baptism isn’t a declaration that you’ve become perfect. It declares that your hope is in the perfect Savior. Every Christian continues growing. Every Christian continues to depend on God’s grace. Don’t allow your awareness of your imperfections to keep you from publicly celebrating God’s forgiveness.
No. In fact, no one does. Even after years of following Jesus, you’ll continue learning. The disciples certainly did. Baptism doesn’t require complete understanding. It requires genuine faith. If you’ve trusted Christ and desire to follow Him, you already know enough to take this step. The Christian life is one of continual growth. You’ll spend the rest of your life discovering the riches of God’s grace.
Yes, when they have personally placed their faith in Jesus Christ and can express, in an age-appropriate way, what the gospel means and why they want to follow Him. As a church, we never want to rush children toward baptism simply because they’re excited in the moment. We also don’t want to unnecessarily delay someone whom God is genuinely drawing to Himself.
For that reason, we love walking alongside parents as they discern their child’s readiness. Our desire isn’t simply for children to be baptized. We want them to understand the beautiful decision they’re making.
Then let’s talk. Seriously. One of the greatest privileges of being a pastor is sitting with people who are exploring faith. No pressure. No sales pitch. Just an honest conversation around God’s Word. If you’re wrestling with questions, don’t wrestle alone. Reach out to one of our pastors. Join a group. Talk with a trusted Christian friend. God often provides clarity through conversations with His people.
After all these questions, the best one may still be the simplest. Not, “Are we ready?” but “Is Jesus worthy?” If He truly died for your sins, if He truly rose again, if He truly calls you His son or daughter, if He truly invites you to follow Him, then perhaps your next step has become wonderfully clear.
