Meet Me at the Mountain

By Barb Zeller

You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Exodus 19:4-6).

The Israelites hadn’t done anything to earn God’s affection. Yet they were His beloved and He couldn’t take His eyes off of them. Nothing on earth was of more value to Him than being in relationship with them. He stripped idols they made of false power, engulfed their captors in the Red Sea and miraculously provided for their every need in the desert. His faithfulness was limitless and His love overwhelming.

This is what it felt like to be chosen, hand-picked, set apart. They were no longer treated as slaves but with dignity and respect. God invited them to the mountain and into His presence to ask a life changing question: “I have chosen you. Now will you choose Me?”

The Israelites went to the mountain and in unison responded “all that the Lord has spoken we will do.” That day they entered into a forever covenant relationship with the King of the Universe. It was an unlikely union that unlocked an eternal reality for each of us.

We are chosen too. Completely loved, unconditionally. Jesus still asks the same question today that was asked of the Israelites: “Will you choose Me?” May His transforming presence compel us to accept the invitation in every aspect of our lives.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9).
